Applications

Nanofilter Technology makes Air and Water Purification possible by "desalting sea water with reductions in both costs and power consumption". This also reduces contaminated particles from air. Overall, nanofilters play an important role in cleaning pollutants. (1)

Nanotechnology cleaning is a very common application of nanomaterials.

Examples:-

  • Nanoparticles can "eat" stains

  • Nanoparticle Soaps increase the "efficiency" of hand soaps by replacing any harmful products

  • "Super Washing Machines" can clean clothing at the nanoscale level and remove 99.99% of bacteria from clothing for up to 30 days

  • Nanofilm can use "polymer molecules" to protect windshields and repel water and dirt (1)

Energy Applications associated with nanotechnology include:-

  • Improvements in power plant efficiencies through "nano-scale heat" and layers for protection

  • Management for future power failures and power distribution

  • Energy demands can be decreased using nanomaterials for storage

    • energy savings and reducing energy usage (2)

Nanotechnology is playing an important role in Food Science. Current applications under Food Science include Clay nanocomposites that act as a "barrier" to gases in "lightweight bottles".

Silver Nanoparticles are being used to make storage bins due to their ability to kill bacteria that causes health risks.

Applications currently under development include:-

  • "Spraying carbon nanotubes onto flexible plastic surfaces" can produce sensors that can detect "spoiled food"

  • Zinc Oxide Particles can block UV rays and protect plastic film from bacteria (3)

The Cosmetics Industry is finding great use of several types of nanomaterials. For example, UV filters use "titanium dioxide and zinc oxide" to protect the skin for harmful UV rays. Lipid nanoparticles are used for the delivery of "cosmetic agents", alternatives for liposomes. These materials provide: "skin hydration, bioavailability, stability" and controlled releases. All of the following companies/products  use nanotechnology:-

  • L'Oreal: uses nanoparticles for an anti-wrinkle cream and to delivery "active ingredients"

  • Freeze 24/7: Ready to assimilate nanotechnology in skin-care products to improve efficiency

  • PureOlogy: products specifically designed for "color treated hair"

  • Sunscreens: making them "transparent, less greasy, less smelly and more absorbable to skin"

Safety tests are conducted many times before the cosmetic products containing any modified nanomaterials are sent to the market. (4)

Nanotechnology offers a variety of important applications in the Medical Field. These particularly include: Restoring Vision and Treatments for Cancer and Diabetes. Click on the image to the right to access information on how Nanotechnology is used for these treatments. (4)
